The HDI DB V200 Bo-Bo diesel locomotive

Prototype information

The V200 is considered by many to be the classic German diesel of the 1950s. There were two builds: the V200.0 (later BR220) built between 1953 and 1957 and the V200.1 built in 1962. Both were fitted with twin Maybach MD870 power units but the later series had greater power (2 x 1350 HP as against 2 x 1100 HP)

The V200's were used primarily for prestigious passenger services. However as electrification spread in Germany they were displaced and increasingly used for secondary passenger and freight trains. The last unit was withdrawn by 1984.

Interestingly, many of the remaining V200s had been sold abroad e.g. to Italy, Spain, Greece, Algeria and Saudi-Arabia.
