8899 - the SNCB co-co 1801 'Quadricourrant' locomotive

Prototype information:

The SNCB's Type 1800 co-co's were the top locos of Europe in the 1960's and along with the SNCF's CC40100's were capable of operating on four voltages. They were fast machines and could run at up to 160 km/h whilst whisking the businessmen of the day between Paris and Brussels in luxurious air conditioned comfort. With a body designed by Paul Arzens, these quadricourrant locos were built in 1964 by Alsthom and Jeumont, but consisted of a small class of only 6 examples.

They were equipped with two gear ratios giving a maximum speed of 160 or 240 km/h, but the high speed lines on which they could have shown their paces were never built. In fact, they hardly exceed the 160 km/h on the French and Belgian traditional lines, not operating on the German and Dutch networks. Thus they never really hauled the large European trains capable of running at 240 km/h for which they were designed.
