8539 - the SNCF bo-bo diesel electric BB67407
Prototype Information
The first BB67400's were
delivered in 1969 alongside the CC2000 and BB67300 . Derived from the
BB67300, their mechanical parts were simplified and the body was mounted on
Metalastik suspension similar to the BB15000 , which made these locos more
comfortable. Equipped with the Pielstick 16 cyinder engine the 140 km/h
locos looked similar to the BB67300's, but were equipped with ETS. Suited to
hauling passenger and freight trains singly and in multiple, their
versatility and their low weight of only 83 tons allowed them to operate on
most routes in France their operating range continually expanding. They then
shared haulage of the fastest trains with the CC72000's in particular on the
non-electrified cross country lines such as Lyon-Bordeaux, Lyon-Nantes or
Lyon-Turns. Just like the BB67300's, a few units were equipped with
couplings which enabled them to haul the Franco-Spanish Catalan-Talgo train.
In spite of widespread electrification and the arrival of the TGV Atlantic
making it possible to connect the provincial towns of south-east and
south-west via the Ile-de- France, the BB 67400 retained a good workload in
particular thanks to their wide route availability. They were then seen on
the non-electrified regional lines such as Lyon and Roanne or on Paris-Beauvais
with the RIO push-pull rakes. The BB67400, of which the last examples were
introduced in 1975 remain the most modern Diesel locos of the SNCF and their
future thus seems assured for several years considering their good
reliability. Current depots In Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Longueau, Nevers and Marseilles |
