8482 - the SNCF 2-D-2 electric loco 9120

Prototype notes

Robust and very imposing machines, the 2D2 9100's were the last SNCF engines to retain the 2D2 wheel arrangement dating from the beginning of the 1950's.

They were descended from the 2D2 5500 locos (which were nicknamed 'Pig-noses' or 'Pregnant woman'). These were already technically very successful - contrary to the 2D2 5000 locos which were not very reliable.

Immediately after the second world war, the SNCF decided to eradicate steam traction on the main lines and began work to electrify the route between Paris and Lyon at 1500 v DC. It was then decided to design a new powerful locomotive of the 2D2 type to haul the express train at up to 140 km/h. Delivery begin in 1950 but, was suddenly stopped in 1951 after tests carried out on the CC7000 series lead to the design of the CC7100 locos with much better adhesion.

The innovative design of the 2D2 9100 was enhanced with their two tone green livery in stark contrast to the monotony of the standard dark green livery of the time. When they entered service they ran between Paris and the larger towns in the south-east of France in particular to Dijon, Lyon then, with the extension of the electrification, to Marseilles. Following the many speed records and developments of 1955 with CC7100 and BB9000, a few years later, came the development of the BB9200 series which were even more powerful and capable of running at 160 km/h.

The arrival of the CC6500 series at the end of the 1960's based at Villeneuve depot, as well as the general increase in running speeds on the SNCF network gradually relegated the 2D2 9100's to hauling secondary and  freight trains. But it was the arrival of the BB7200's and BB22200's which sealed their fate. Their change of allocation to Lyon Mouche depot was completed in 1977. The two last locos, 2D2 9134 and 9135 were scrapped in 1987.
